no toilet small enough

My bathroom rough-in is 9" from the wall. I don't know where the builder ever found a toilet to fit the area. It's time to replace the toilet and I cannot find one to fit the rough in. The last toilet I found would fit if I had another 1/2" or so directly behind the trap. Do you think it's possible to cut the drywall and make a little alcove for the one area of the trap which is too tight to the wall? I could make a round hole and find some kind of ring to trim it out with, in other words make it look professional. Otherwise I am not going to be able to change out the toilet. We can't use an offset flange because we are right up against the joist as it is. Thanks for your help!
