New wood floor splitting along the grain

We had new, prefinished oak flooring installed last summer (2008) in our kitchen, living room, and dining room. Recently, we started to see the wood finish and sometimes the wood itself splitting along the grain in a number of places. It is happening more in one room (LR) than another, and we seem to find more of it every day. We have a crawl space and live near a creek, and we were told at the time of installation that our house had a high humidity level but within the normal range for wood floor installation. Lately, the weather has alternated some from nice and dry to rainy and humid, and we have had no need to use AC or heat until the last few days.

Anyone ever experience this, know the reason, or know how to prevent further splitting?
