new veneer for 50s modern exterior doors

We would like to keep the 50s modern exterior front door on our 4-level split. The veneer is dirty, cracked, buckling in places, and missing whole strips of veneer. We would like to re-veneer the whole door - inside and out. I hear it's costly and I can't find a craftsman in our area (DC-MD) to do it. TOH had a posting about repairing veneer - but not on complete replacement. Is this feasible? Any references or resources we can consult to find someone to do it or do it ourselves? We want to stay faithful to the 50s style.
