New Kitchen Cabinet Shim - Please Help! ;-)
newbie1969

Hey all!

I posted a blog on the Bob Vila website and did not get any response from anyone but someone told me about this site to see if I can get a response.

I am looking for some professionals that have installed quite a few kitchen cabinets. I am on a limited budget but my wife and I are going to be redoing our kitchen. We have hired contractors for the plumbing and electrical but will be doing the cabinets ourselves along with other things. The main thing are the cabinets. We have ordered RTA cabinets and have put them all together and have things going forward. I have watched many videos as well as read many articles, and bought some books. Everything I have seen so far makes it seem like adjoining the cabinets together prior to installing them is sort of the biggest headache and can damage the cabinets if you don't either do it right or have the proper tools.

I have, through a friend of mine, heard about this new cabinet shim. I went on the website and watched the video and from what I see...it seems like a great thing to purchase to make the installation much more easier. All I am looking for is for someone that has experience with cabinet installs to let me know that purchasing these shims would definitely help out or not. The website shows they will be available shortly and have contacted the company. Just received an email back from them saying that the shims were just just completed and I can buy them hopefully this next week. I want to buy them but don't want to waste my money if someone feels it wouldn't be worth it.

Hope to hear back from someone. The website with the video on the shim is www.h4innovationsllc.com. Can someone please take a look?

Thank you in advance for your opinion.

Looks like a fine product you can't go wrong with. I'd get it without hesitation.

The cabinets I usually buy come with similar shims.

Thank you so much for the response! What is the name of the cabinets that come with those shims?

I really do appreciate giving me your advise on whether they are worth buying them. They look easy to use. Are they as easy as they look?

Thanks again!

I buy my cabinets at granadawood.com, they are located in Anaheim, CA. Assembly required.

Give them a shot.

I took a look at their website. Looks like they have pretty nice cabinets but my wife and I had purchased our already. Thanks again.

Looking at their website I could not find the shims that you said they had with their cabinets. Do you know if they sell them separately? Just trying to get a cost comparison for the shims. I was surprised you said the cabinet company you use has a similar sort of thing because after I heard about this shim from a friend of mine I had done some pretty extensive research on these things and I had not found anything out there on other products like this.

Thanks again for your help. We really appreciate it!

I don't know whether Granada Cabinets sells their hardware kits. Call them to find out.

The shims are really inexpensive, but if you are trying to save some money, make your own shims or use screws and washers to connect base cabinets together.

They should come with each new cabinet

I agree if they work like the video says they do. I have been in contact with the company and they are sending me a pack of them. I will update the post when I use them to let you all know how easy they were to use and if they really helped.

Thank you again for your input.

With one recent island cabinet install I found that all the cabinet carcases were out of square so equal-space shimming left the faces in a zig-zag. Builder supplied cabinets and not cheap ones. Wood is not a perfect material and humans do not always get everything as close as they should when they're pushing production time.

Speed, convenience, and novelty have become today's by-words which as often as not leaves something lacking in the results. Thank you, but I'll remain old fashioned with my cabinet installs so I can adjust things to perfection even if it takes longer. When these nice folks invent a similar easily adjustable shim I might be interested.
