nd advise, brick over concrete slab steps

I am looking for some advice on how to lay flagstone or mortar over my concrete slab front steps. I'm only looking to place the flagstone vertically and then lay bluestone or grantie on the treads and top foyer. The steps had masonary paint on them which is peeling off. It's coming off easy so I plan to clean the rest of the paint off before I start. From there, I'm looking for some advice. I've read a few discussions stating to scratch coat the concrete with an acid treatment? What consistancy should my mortar be since I'm placing the flagstone on a verticle surface? Should I try and tack on some metal mesh backikng to the stairs first for good adhesion?
I've done a ton of tile work before but never masonry.
Any help and advice is GREATLY apprecieated.

gees, so happy to see people are full of advise. thanks but the project is done now. got the best advise from just going to a masonry supply yard and talking with the people that work there.
