I have been getting several patches of moss on my lawn. Though it rakes up quite easily, it leaves the ground bare underneath. Can I toss the moss into the compost bin or should I toss it in the trash? As for the bare spots, I can seed, but do I need a moss preventer or can I just use regular starter or other fetilizer?

Re: moss

If you really hate the moss(I actually encourage it in parts of my yard), you need to correct the conditions that encourage it--acidity and poor drainage. Check your soil pH (kits are readily available and garden centers and big box stores) and use lime to neutralize the ph before reseeding. You've probably got hard pan in a low spot that collects water. You need to till in organic matter, maybe even level the area. Or learn to love the moss.
