Mastic Coated Hardwood

The floors under all the old floor coverings are beautiful oak. The kitchen floor had stick-on linoleum tiles. Under that - mastic. It didn't make the stick-on tiles stick any better. They came right off. I've been told a drum sander will take the mastic off if it's dry. The tiles have been off for several days and it's still just as sticky. The mastic is thick in many places. How can I get most of it off so it will dry?
