I had some batteries leak in a maglight and couldn't get the batteries out either. It bothered me a bit too, but I couldn't blame the flashlight. I got many years of service out of it.
The chinese LED are ok, but if you want a real light try a Surefire. Lots of models with the least expensive starting about $35. Small, but powerful. They have LED's too.

For those who were interested in what finally happened here:

Maglite sent me a brand new 2 D cell blue flashlight at no cost. They mentioned on the receipt that Energizer would cover the cost under their battery warranty.

My advice is not to buy a 3-cell flashlight, since they don't sell batteries in 3-packs. :D

That is because battery manufacturers have taken their cues from the hotdog and hotdog bun industries! :eek::eek::D
