loud noise when turning on water

What would cause a loud banging type noise when turning on the water for showers, flushing toilets...etc. It seems to come from the basement where the water heater is located. It has been doing this for awhile and I want to try and remedy the situation.

We would really need to listen to this noise to be able to tell, but generally speaking:

- could be loose pipes, unsecured to the house framing like they should be.

- could be an old water heater full of sediments the size of golf balls.

- could be high water pressure.

Invite a plumber to check.

in addition to DJ's ideas it could also be air trapped in an old closed off branch of pipe in the basement.

Air in the lines would prevent air hammer not cause it.
