load bearing walls

how can you tell if an interior wall is load bearing or not short of hiring a strucual engineer?

A good indication is to look under the floor beneath the wall. A bearing wall will be supported all the way down to the foundation.

Yes ... but if it is a slab home this wouldn't apply ... you have to look at the top to see what the wall is supporting as well.

Load bearing walls can be complicated to determine ..... depending on age, type, design and engineering also if previous renovations or additions on the home.

Most people commonly only consider walls that are located perpendicular to floor and ceiling joists which in most cases is true .... but ..... there can be load bearing walls that will run parallel with these joists as well.

Google "load bearing walls" to find articles explaining this in more detail.
