Little water from tub spout after replacing stems

After replacing Central compression faucet stems (one new and one cleaned up at the hardware store),the water coming from the tub spout and the shower is greatly reduced. With the hot and cold stems out, there is plenty water coming through the faucet part of the pipes. There is no separate diverter for the shower. The diverter is on the tub spout and I have removed the spout and shower head. I'm assuming the mixing pipe is where the hot and cold water come together and out the spout. Is the most likely cause a clogged mixing pipe and if so, how do I clean that out? This was my first faucet repair job and the whole process has taken quite some time. I would really hate to call a plumber at this point. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!! Thanks.
