Lights dimming in home office after installing new Laser printer

I just upgraded to a laser printer and since plugging it in, the lights in my home office are constantly dimming. I know laser printers use more power, but I am not sure the reason behind the dimming.

My home office has its own dedicated breaker and it powers 6 pot lights, 2 computers, 2 monitors, my router, high speed internet modem and of course my new laser printer.

I know it has something to do with power the printer is drawing as it just went to sleep and the lights stop dimming

Any suggestions on what I can do to correct this issue?

Thanks in advance

Re: Lights dimming in home office after installing new Laser printer

Laser printers draw approximately a metric crapload of power. The fuser bulb alone can be upwards of 500W. You are probably overloading the circuit.

Looking at the numbers -

Computer - probably 500W PSU x 2 = 1000W
6 pot lights, assuming 60W bulbs = 360W
two 20" LCD monitors = ~25W x2 = 50W
Laser Printer = ~750W (though could be 1000W+, depending on brand)

total = 2,160 W = 18A @ 120V

So even if you are on a 20A circuit, that's overloaded according to code (load only to 80% of rating). Chances are that it's actually only a 15A circuit.

As for correcting the issue, the most direct solution is to install a new outlet on it's own, or an underutilized, circuit.
