level concrete pad before adding pergola?
Dave-on-Bass

I've got a 16'x18' concrete pad that I'd like to build a pergola on. The thing is, the pad is not completely level. It drops 4" over the 18' run. Should I go through the hassle of having the pad leveled before building the pergola? Or is it fine the way it is?

As long as the slab is sloping away from the house, I wouldn't worry about it. Pads are usually sloped at 1/4" per foot for good drainage, so your 4" drop in 18 feet is right in line with what it should be, provided it is away from the structure.

A. Spruce is correct. If you level the pad, then water may pool around the posts and rot them from the bottom. Cut the posts on the pergola to compensate for the slope and be sure to use something to keep the posts from direct contact with the concrete.
