LED dimmable lighting in chandelier

Hi, I am replacing outdated bulbs with LEDs in a community conference site. The chandeliers are on dimmers. When I put in LED bulbs equal to 60 Watts and turned it all the way up there was no flicker. I turned them off and they went off completely. Do I need to install an LED dimmer switch? Everything seems to work OK now. Will there be trouble later? Would the chandelier react differently with 100 watt equivalent LEDs?

Not all traditional dimmer switches work well with LED lights, try replacing the switch with LED rated one.

Not all LEDs are dimmable

Not all LEDs work well with LED dimmers

Not all LED dimmers work well with LED lights.

Which bites cause its kind of a crap shoot each time a customer selects a particular style of dimmer.... ugh

Very true HR, if you find a combination that works..stick to it.

Ditto on the compatibility issues. No old-fashioned dimmer will work with LED lights well if at all because these require a minimum voltage/current to operate at all. The LED compatible dimmers use PWM (pulse-width modulation) to lower the lighting level, essentially short full-power flashes happening so quickly that you don't see them. And not all LED driver circuits like having PWM applied to their inputs. I believe that in time some standardization will occur but for now it's a crap-shoot and all you can do is try and hope you win. Don't bank on anything with these until you've tried it and know it will work.

I had the same compatibility problems when I had to specify devices connected to discrete outputs on computers/PLC's.

If you don't know an awful lot about the loads on a TRIAC output you either try the combination in the office or specify a load resistor, and throw it away if it's not needed at start-up. Same for dimmers & LED lamps.
