Leaky cast iron seals

I have 54 y/o cast iron plumbing system which the seals appear to be slightly leaking a sticky brown substance. I'm also getting a vey slight odor.. My home inspector (three years ago I bought the place) said main stack pipes were just fine. How can I reseal the pipes?

Re: Leaky cast iron seals

The original oakum has probably deteriorated. You can buy lead wool( like steel wool- but made of lead instead) from a good plumbing supply house, clean out some of the area that the leak is coming from and then with some small chisels carefully tap in the lead wool until the leak stops.
