Laying vinyl on particle board?

Hello all,
My wife and I are renovating our family room and we bought vinyl tile to do it in. After pulling up the carpet I discovered the subfloor is particle board; it has swelled in places where it got wet; all the nails have pushed up to some degree and basically I'm asking what do I do? Do I tear it up and lay down something better or hammer in the nails, level it and don't worry about it?
Thanks, Bryan

Re: Laying vinyl on particle board?

I suspect you have an Oriented Strand Board ( OSB ) subfloor and not particale board. For flooring applications 1/4 inch particle board is used as an under layment when vinyl or linoleum are laid because of the relatively smooth surface.
If the under layment has an uneven or rough surface this would telegraph through the finish material.

In your case if the subfloor is somewhat uneven and rough level it out as much as you can and secure the fasteners then apply an under layment such as the 1/4 particle board or popular. You will need an appropriate filler for the seam joints.
Apply your vinyl over top and should result in a nicely finished floor.
