Laundry umbrella is not behaving

Hi! I love to dry my clothes on an old fashioned clothesline when weather permits and I picked up an almost perfectly good umbrella-style clothesline at the local recycling center exchange area recently. It's been working great but there's no "stop" for the arms (I stuck a large screw in the hole where the stop doodad used to be and it worked fine). I accidentally pushed the collar up too far when trying to collapse it, and now the arms are thoroughly stuck and it won't close. The whole thing is riveted together so I can't just take it apart. I was able to wiggle one of the arms off the end of the spreader bar but it's still just as jammed as ever. Any advice?

Without seeing what you got, it's hard to suggest.

However, this is an old umbrella, and things like these happen to old things. Maybe it's time for something new?

I tried to post a picture here but no luck. I'll probably just cut it apart and wire it back together and hope it holds up for this season at least.

To post a picture, you have to upload it to a host like photobucket, then share the link here.

It would stand to reason that if you pushed the bail up too far, it over extended the umbrella and now has it bound under tension. Take a block of wood and a hammer and try to reset it with a couple of good, solid blows. If this doesn't work, you can always revert to your plan of cutting it apart and bolting it back together.

I have a similar clothesline, it's problem is weak joints that are collapsing, which means I've either got to eliminate the joints or bolster them up with some strongbacks.

Also, to post a picture, you have to use a photo-host, then link the image here.

They are called laundry trees, and you can still buy them. Maybe tapping gently with a block of wood will overcome the friction? Or spray it down with penetrating oil (which you will later need to remove lest it ruin the clean clothes).

When you decide to buy a new one, look at a local mom & pop hardware store (Ace, True Value, Hardware Hank, etc.), not the big box. You can also find them on Amazon.
