joining two wood frame windows

I live in a 200 yo home in New Hampshire. In the front I had a window that was 30" by 64". I am replacing it with 2 64" by 14" wooden frame transom windows. What is the best way to secure and insulate these 2 windows together as one. BTW I had to rebuild the sill.

The way I usually mull two windows together is caulk on both sides of the frames that will be put together, take off the sash stops (or jamb liners depending on the type of units) and screw the two frames together. Then I put a metal plate to span across the two window frames to secure them together as well.
