We just bought at 1930 brick home in northeast Indiana last fall. Many renovations had already been done including attic insulation and window replacement with double pane vinyl windows. Electric wiring upgrades were also done. In addition, a geothermal HVAC system had been installed with electric back up. This is our first winter in the house and the exterior walls are very cold. The kitchen cabinets also had water standing in them (they are against the outside west wall). Our electric bill last month was $525!! I am looking to insulate the exterior walls but read Tom Silva's article about the potential disasters with freeze/thaw and need advice on how to safely do this without creating a bigger problem. I can't afford to pay this kind of electric bill every month! I am a DIY guy and have plenty of experience remodeling, etc. but don't want to screw up. Please help.
