Installing a shower niche

We have taken out the tub and are putting in a tiled shower. Need some pointers on how to install a niche between the studs. We were told it was best to wait until the tiling is done up to the bottom of where we want the niche located, so it would look good and not require tile cutting. We will need to put in some support pieces between the studs, but it is a problem to do it through a hole in the concrete board! Any suggestions for how to accomplish this would be much appreciated.

Re: Installing a shower niche

It's not hard at all. You need to cut the cement board to the size of your recessed niche, and then you support blocking will be easy to insert and fasten between the two studs.

You can also glue the blocking into place.

What waterproofing method are you using?

Re: Installing a shower niche

Cut your supports that will be on top and bottom to size . Pre-drill two holes on the top side of the bottom support down and at an angle toward the back and into the stud . For the top support
drill from the underside into the stud and a angle to the back . Screw into the predrilled holes slowly but with firm pressure . You can attach a handle to the board such as a for a cabinet to help hold the board in place .:D

Have a look at the new schluter shower prefab niches. Saves a lot of time and they're waterproof!
