Installing Picture Rail on Brick Wall
nicholas mccall...

I would like to install a picture rail onto the top of my living room brick wall, sufficient to support a heavy 4' x 3' mirror. Ideally, I would hope that the picture rail would obviate any further drilling into the brick for hanging purposes (for the life of the picture rail).

Any product and/or technique recommendations would be highly appreciated!

That really all depends on the size of the fasteners, the space between the fasteners, the type of the fasteners. A picture rail is used for this purpose, but it must be secured to the wall. One small sheet rock screw on each end will not hold up anything more than the board itself.

We have picture rails in our main hallway on the first and second floors. We had removed them to remove all the layers of wallpaper over the horse hair plaster. When I put the rails back up, I used a 3 inch screw every 12 inches. Our studs are on 12 inch centers. I never want to be bothers with anything that we want to hang on the rail. We currently have 2 very large mirrors, and a multitude of pictures.

I really do not understand the issue with using fasteners to hold up more weight that expected. It really all depends on how much you cherish the mirror and how you feel about cleaning up glass. Do the job right the first time, and you will never, ever have to worry about it again.

Picture rail was never intended to hang heavy mirrors. Mirror=/= picture.

So is there any way to hang heavy mirrors in front of a brick wall aside from just drilling supports into the brick for the specific mirror I want to hang? The picture rail was attractive because it would be a one-time deal for whatever I wanted to hang there in the future. I'd like to leave the brick alone to the extent possible.

Yes there is away.
Look at the metal picture rails.
I completed the plaster work in a Historical Museum and the Architect specified the use of the metal type picture rail that was to have many heavy items hanging from it.
