Installing a Over-the-range Microwave oven

Hello,

My wife and I, would like to replace our current over the range venting hood with a venting microwave oven.

Currently the cabinets are 42 and go straight to the ceiling. We're debating replacing the cabinet over the range versus modifying the existing cabinet.

Is it possible to a ready made cabinet?

Also we'd like to install under cabinet lighting in the nook where the range area. (It's kinda dark) Can the light on the microwave be used to turn on the under cabinet lighting?

Thanks for all the advices

Re: Installing a Over-the-range Microwave oven

much cheaper and easier than having a new cabinet built would be to have a filler strip made. the filler strip would fill the space above the microwave and below the cabinet and it would look just like the cabinets and like it was supposed to be there. depending on the height of the cabinet above you might have to install some framing to support the microwave but that's not a big deal.

the microwave might give you the lighting you need but you cannot hook up the under cabinet lighting to work when you hit the light button on the microwave.

also, the over the stove microwaves are supposed to have a dedicated 20 amp circuit.

Make sure you have at least 30 inches clearance between the burners and microwave unit.

There are short standard-sized cabinets at Lowes/Home Depot.

Is your exhaust vented? Probably best with frame as described above.

Unvented? You could use a cabinet.

code requires a minimum of 16" from the cooktop to the bottom of the microwave, 30" is way to high. i prefer to install them at 18" -20" depending on what the cabinet height will allow.
