Installing new porch posts

Hello, I have the idea of removing 3 outdated porch rails which are the support to my front porch roof. These rails are metal and are not rusty or loose as I paint them every spring but I would like something more modern like wooden posts with some trim. My porch floor is concrete. What type of wooden post should I use that would not rot so fast and that I can paint? I would like the posts to be at least 6x6. I am planning on sitting these post on cast aluminum plates to prevent some rot at the bottom.

Re: Installing new porch posts

You might consider merely encasing the existing metal posts with wood. As to wood or wood trim which contacts the concrete:  consider using plastic dimentional lumber or molding profiles for these areas. Aztek is one brand of such plastic lumber. Home Depot also carries stock plastic dimensional lumber and molding profiles.

There are also some systems on the market for columns disigned to encase posts.

I think that you mean posts. Rails are the horizontal piece that is between the posts. Rails have nothing to do with structure support.

I like what Ordjen suggests. I would not use just a square 6 by stock. I would create something more ornamental. There are plenty of options. We do not make suggestions on what would look the best. We are not there, you are there and it is your home.
