I saw it for myself. There is NO sheathing/plywood on the outside of the studs. What would you do now? Also, what insulation would you add? HELP!!!

well, your going to have to strip down the old siding. .insulate teh cavitys then sheath it.. then put house wrap on then the rain screen.. it looks like you bought a money pit

DeniseTW,

Now you understand why we recommended to rip and remove the existing siding in the first place:

1. To uncover what you go there.

2. To make repairs, to make changes and to make improvements.

3. To bring everything up to code.

4. To have the correct surface for the new hardiplanks.

Costly? yes, but worth it.

Yep looks that way. What type of insulation would you use & how to install it other than the rolled fiberglass type? We are going to work on one side at a time in order to preserve the integrity of the house. Thanks for your input.

Rolled insulation is fine. Check owenscorning.com for the R value in your area.

Dow Chemicals has a "FROTH" Pak which contains the two chemicals needed for spray foam, which can insulate more fully instead of rolled insulation. And, you can do it yourself.

Thanks, have you ever used it? The reviews I've been able to find are less than favorable.

Not yet. However, most of the pro reno shows on HGTV and DIY Network use foam in their projects and have pronounced it superior to standard insulation.

spray foam is definatly better but it is also much more expensive. bats will work fine but are often a real pain to install on an old house with uneven spacing of the studs. if you can afford it I would go with spray foam for sure but the old stand by fiberglass will do just fine. I have worked on a few houses where the siding is the sheathing it is usually .75 or 1 inch thick shiplap or dutch lap not standard claps. another option for you would be to sheath over the siding with 3/8 ply and then put on the hardi but then you have no opportunity to insulate and you would have to build out all of your trim
