Increasing wall height

I have a home built in the late 1890's. They built a bedroomroom next to the outside of the house at some point. Underneath the drywall on one wall is the original siding of the house. Then later they built an extension next to the room with the roof going over the originally built room next to the house. So it's a room within a room. I would like to remove the roof of the first room and build the walls up to the second extensions ceiling, which is the real roof. It seems like removing the roof of the original room would be relatively easy becuase it's not connected to the actual roof, but how do I build up the walls? Do I need to rebuild the wall with longer studs? They won't be weight bearing. I'm in California so earthquakes are an issue.
