Inadequate space in the new house

Hi everyone. I live in an apartment in Toronto. I live with my father and mother. We lived in Toronto because my dad used to work in Toronto. He is retired now and we are planning to relocate to our hometown in Montreal. I used to work as a salesgirl. Before we move, we need to downsize the household items because our new house is a not much spacious and it's inconvenient to carry all the household items to the new house. So before we leave we need to keep our belongings in a safe place. One of my friends suggested me that, for situations like this, people opt self-storage. When I discussed with my parents, they told me that if its safe, we can go for it. I think it’s better to rent a storage unit in Toronto before we leave this place. Do you think it's safe? But usually how long can we rent a storage space?
