Ignition problem on boiler

My boiler throws its breaker all the time (the one on the igniter unit). I typically have to light a piece of paper to get it to fire. Once it fires up it burns normally. Is this typically a problem with the nozzle not being clean or should I replace the igniter unit? Is that tough to replace?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Stuart

Stuart:

This is usually due to a short in the high voltage coil that creates a spark to ignite the oil.

Could you re-adjust your personal account so that you can receive personal messages---I'll give you a list of instructions if you want to try to repair this yourself.

I think I updated my account to allow private messages.

Re: Ignition problem on boiler

Nashua,

Thanks again for your guidance. Your analysis was spot on. After your assistance in diagnosing the high voltage transformer as the culprit, I located and replaced it with a new one. Now my furnace fires up really fast without a lot of fuel being sprayed into the boiler. This makes the burn begin nice and smooth. It is operating better than it has in years.

Thanks again for all your help,
-Stuart
