Re: I thought the Board was a goner for sure

I went to the TOH Facebook page and asked them. Here is my question and their answer.

"Are you abandoning the advice section on thisoldhouse.com? The link to it is no longer on the home page. You should also mention the site on your show "Ask This Old House" as another source of information for questions that you don't have time to get to on the show."

"This Old House Hi Keith,
We are currently renovating the site and as with many renovation projects, we're rolling out additional features and functionality almost daily. Thank you for your patience as we work to provide you with a spectacular new thisoldhouse.com!"

At least somebody put a bug in their ear. Good job.

Sounds like a typical corporate say-nothing canned response that was developed in a planning meeting. It probably took them several hours to come up with wording that suggests everything, sidesteps specific issues, and promises nothing.

This is the link to the house forums at houzz (Houzz took over Gardenweb 2 years ago)
There are subforums on every topic, and I'm sure any or all of you would fit in over there. I first joined in 2006 to get my kitchen floorplans de-bugged (they came through in a big way, too) and have stuck around.
http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/

This board is not very busy, but it is purely old-house stuff.
http://www.myoldhouseon^line.com/forum/ (remove ^)

And finally, a newer site; all of us started out at a now-spammey site called oldhouseweb, then one brave enterprising guy set up a new site called wavyglass.org, but he abandoned it 2 years ago and it went completely to spam, so several of us started another community (in large part most of the regulars from oldhouseweb)
http://www.thehistoricdistrict.org/
There are a good number of mods so no spam. and you don't have to jump through hoops to write scr-aper or on-line. :)

Liking the 'Historic district' concept, guess I'll join due to my love of old houses, but the site categories are too wide in scope for my liking. I'd like something busier too, and nothing wrong with newer homes so I'd prefer there be some of that too. If there aren't any house trailers involved my feelings won't be hurt.

I will check out 'Houzz' but I can tell you right now that their response to Keith is the kind of BS I most deeply despise; if you can't clearly answer a simple question then you need to go back to kindergarten and start life over. One strike against already, that's not a good way to attract an intelligent good-looking bunch like us

Hopefully we'll have enough time left here to make sure we can stay in touch and hopefully together. I'll be making the internet router run hot tomorrow, got the week off so I'm focusing on the quest come sunup.

I've joined a couple places now.

"The historic district" is about really old houses only, but chock full of the arcane knowledge needed with them. Very good for what it is but not home.

"House repair Talk" is great, a lot like here, and nice intelligent people. Had to wait on a verification email, can't post without that so no spam! So far this one is looking like home!

I'll join "DIY" for other topics. "Houzz" is full of vapid 'What shade of fuschia should I use?' crap, made me nauseous. "The Old House" was sort of musty and boring. "Contractors Talk" seems decent, but just for tradesmen only. They have a 'sister site' "DIY Chatroom" that has homeowners involved and a good topic layout but it's ad-infested. Membership might lose those, dunno

Any thoughts shout'em out.

I see that they still don't have a link to us on their home page, but they do have links to houzz and hometalk.

Re: I thought the Board was a goner for sure

Yeah, saw that too. The [email protected] are just throwing us away here without a thought or care

I asked Angie the Admin over at HomeRepairTalk if she'd mind a dozen new refugees from here and she said we'd be very welcome. The usual crowd there are nice folks and good-natured banter happens regularly. If you join you'll have to wait on a verification email up to 24 hours (an anti-spam defense) before you can post. Kind of slow there and seems to be mostly northern US and Canadians. That's where you'll find me when the final blow happens here and all the hard work everyone has done here gets wiped away. Won't be like here but it's as close as I've found so far.

(begin rant) Should have known bad things were coming here when the vapid twits can't even spell "House" correctly yet they think they know all about them (end rant)

Re: I thought the Board was a goner for sure

Finally found the forum - did not know what I was going to do next time I had a problem:)

I have not been here much because I couldn't log in for months - finally could but no questions of late - well, I do have a screw protruding through the upper frame of a cabinet I need to figure out how to cut off. My brother in law says to use my Dremel.

I hang out at Houzz as jhmarie - but agree there is a ton of wading through "desperately need to find right paint color for my dining room before painter arrives tomorrow" and other "desperate" "first world" problems - and some very snarky designers. I mainly stay to help people with oak kitchens stop feeling bad about their kitchens and to end the use of the word "dated". I send people to John Bridge weekly. There is some seriously bad tile work going on out there. The garden web which is now part of Houzz has more specific categories like electrical, flooring, home repair - I head for kitchens:)

Hope you all don't disappear

Jeanne
