HI all my sump pump just bit the big one get a new one but the new one is shorter the the old one. I know what i have to do to make it work but i live in Niagara Falls Ny and we are starting to see a melting. I can not put the new pump in to the pit the motor and all would be underwater. I have to stop the water form getting in to the pit how do i do that? I only need to do it to get the new one. Any ideas?

I don't understand your question. Are you asking how to stop water from coming into your sump pump pit?

If it's in your basement, by water proofing your basement.

Lift the old one out.
Make connections.
Place the new on back in the pit.
Then plug it in.
I'm not sure why all the water needs to be out or drains to the sump need to be plugged. Get out as much water as needed with a bucket or pump and do the work.

A sump pump is for emergency water leak.

If you have water in the pit continuously, then the situation has to be fixed.

the owner wrote I can not put the new pump in to the pit the motor and all would be underwater.

My question is why no install a submersible pump ?

If you're stuck with the 'dry mount' type pump and can't get a submersible, you'll need another temporary pump system to keep the water at bay while you're working. A cheap drill-operated one that hooks to garden hoses might be enough if there's not too much flow or lift involved.
