Hybrid or Solar Hot Water Heater?

We are about to start a major renovation here in Northwest Florida on our forever home and I’m really torn between putting in a new hybrid hot water heater or a solar hot water system. This is an issue because:
• Our climate; some cold, some hot, mostly moderate.
• Current 10kW solar array makes more electricity than we use, even with the old inefficient hot water heater.
• The SunDrum solar (Hudson, MA) system I’m considering leverages my PV panels to make hot water and increases their output, but costs twice as much to install.

I like the idea of solar HW here in Florida, but since I have plenty of solar generated electricity is it worth the cost when compared to a Hybrid WH? Logic says no, but instinct and emotion says yes. I have read just about everything I can find on green building and this topic and both sides make equally great points. Can anyone here help me figure this out?

Thanks much.

Re: Hybrid or Solar Hot Water Heater?

Hi Val, like you mentioned, the answer depends on which side you tend to lean over more - your emotions or what makes sense. You will not be saving money annually by using a solar hot water, compared to the hybrid one because you already have spare electricity to use. I would say make the most of your current solar panels and install a hybrid HW.

Thank you
