I recently bought a house that has exposed 2x6 rafters at 24" on center. Where the rafters come down and intersect the exterior walls, the drywall has been notched around each rafter. There are gaps between the drywall and the wood rafters varying between 1/8" to 1/4" wide. What's a good way to fill these gaps to produce a cleaner, more finished look? Can I fill them with hot mud and then paint? I want to avoid, say, cutting J-beads around the 3 sides of each and every rafter and then mudding all those (there are about 3 dozen rafters that I want to finish around). I also want to avoid sanding if possible.
