How to Build a Small Bookcase - Routing Straight Rabbets on Birch Veneer Plywood

I'm having troubling routing rabbets that are straight for the sides of this bookcase. I am using a piloted bit and an edge attachment on my router. I am able to route straight rabbets on a piece of scrap pine but not on the birch plywood. Any suggestions? Thanks

Clamp a straight board on top and use as a router guide. Steel stud will also work.

You may need additional support. Use a scrap piece of plywood the same thickness as what you're routing to give your router full support.

I find that even with a pilot bit or guide, I have trouble keeping the router plate flat on the work surface, and as a result the rabbet (or whatever) is not straight. The extra support helps considerably.

1 - more support - Either the material or the router is not being held securely, make everything is supported well.
2 - more clamps - Something is moving that shouldn't be, add more clamps
3 - more passes - Making successive shallow cuts is better than one cut trying hog out the full amount.

How sharp is the bit? A dull bit will burn, wander, and be hard to push through the material.

Thanks for the advice. I will try again using all advice provided.

The odd part is that my setup is exactly the same when rabbeting a pine board or birch veneer plywood. I'm always successful for the pine board but not for the plywood!?

The birch plywood is much harder and may require several shallower passes rather than one.
