how to be energy efficient with new open floor plans

Hi, We recently moved into a house built in 1998. It has an open great room with few vents and the thermostat is in one corner of the room. Because of the thermostat is in the great room the furnace is turned on quite often, eventhough the other rooms in the house have comfortable temperature. The current temperature setting is 67 F. If we bring the temperature below this the great room is very cold. How can we solve this issue?

What type of central heat do you have???-----forced hot air with registers, forced hot water with baseboard, radiant floor heat, etc.??? ---when you say "vents" I assume you mean forced hot air.

A common method of modification is to zone off the heating system so that you have a t-stat in the large room, and perhaps one or two additional registers added, and one or two other t-stats in the rest of the house.

Zone ducting can be expensive; another method is to install a vented gas heater in the large room, vented thru an outside wall or chimney with its own t-stat, & move the existing t-stat to another room.

That way, you will obtain more control over the temperature & comfort in both the large room & the rest of the house.

Have your HVAC tech over to suggest particulars & a price range, or try consulting the Yellow Pages under "Heating Contractors" & have several techs over to give a written estimate proposal---get at least 2 or 3 quotes before you decide; the price quotes may vary considerably.

Howdy consider looking in the attic of the grand room an seeing if you have adequate insulation for your area. Are the windows caulked on the out side and has it worn- stopping air infiltration makes room warmer.

The movement of air in or out of a building is due to wind blow causing an increase or decrease
in pressure to force the air through.

The infiltration can also take place through the porosity of the building envelope material as well.
This may be due to partial pressure difference of air.How does this lead to Energy Wastage?

With the movement of air in or out of a building without a regulation several undesirable occurrences take place.

* In the winter the heated air from within the building leak out while to compensate this cold dry air rushes in.
The energy used to heat the indoor air is lost while to heat up the fresh air more fuel burn up.
The fresh air is dry and causes an imbalance in comfort humidity level within the space.
More humidity is therefore added through humidifiers which represent a loss of energy and also water.
* In the summer a reverse process takes place.
The Hot and humid out side air representing an additional heat load leak in pushing conditioned cool air out.
More energy is used by the Air conditioner to lower and stabilize the indoor temperature and humidity.
The leaked out conditioned air is a considerable loss in energy.
* The unconditioned fresh air will bring in pollutants such as spores, pollen, ticks and mites,
microbes, dust etc. This necessitates efficient filters which tend to get clogged soon due to their miniscule air passages. They therefore require more ***** to push air through.
