hot water temperature difference

What could be causing the hot water temperature to vary by 20 degrees between upstairs and downstairs outlets? Upstairs is the cooler and farthest from source.
Gas fired hot water heater of sufficient size. No excessive usage. New Jersey weather has not been unusually cold. The problem seems to come and go and it does not seem to be solved by adjusting the thermostat on heater.

The main cause for your problem is a cross connection. The main cause of a cross connection between the hot and cold is a failed cartridge in a single lever tub or shower faucet.

What kind of faucet is it? one handle, two handles or something else?

What kind of pipes do you have? galvanized, copper or something else?

You need to know, then, what to look for in both a well-made, and a shoddily made pipe, so that you can tell the difference, and buy only those pipes that are well made.

what does that mean? makes no sense to me

It means a writer is getting paid to write nonsense posts with the intent of plugging a website instead of a spambot of course.
