I dont think I ever looked at how one was wired internally, manufactuer says [email protected] 240v thats what it gets, when my hw heater stops heating hot water I call a plumber ironically.

Usually, a residential grade box store type water heater is factory set for 240/30A. Next time you install a water heater check out the nameplate and wiring diagram for the possible factory configurations. Note: you cannot field change many hot water heaters because of the thermostats.
