They take longer to heat the water, that is known, you have to remember that the unit is off all the time until the water starts to flow, then a sensor turns on the heating element, be it electric or gas. It's kind of a trade off for saving money on your utility bill. The water will get there faster through a smaller pipe, the law of physics, but I doubt it would get there fast enough to make that much diff. I agree with sabo
