Horizontal cracks on wall
Rufus

House was built in 1929 has two layers of interior wall one looks like wall board and a course sheetrock together (not sure what this construction is called, please if someone knows please let me know. My question is horizontal cracks about 4 feet up from floor are showing up in a couple of rooms on the second floor. I would like to fix before painting.
What is best way to repair?
Much thanks for your input.

Minor cracks are not a big deal.

The best repair method is: carve a channel along the crack with a utility knife, fill with joint compound, run a mesh tape, cover with more mud, extract extra mud with a putty knife, sand and repeat as necessary when dry, till the mesh disappear. Prime and paint.

Go to YouTube and watch some demos.

Bigger cracks are a different story.

The large sheets of drywall were probably hung horizontally, which explains the 4 foot tall lines. What you are doing is repairing cracked drywall at the seams. YouTube should have some nice videos on how to fix that.

Personally I like the fiberglas mesh to the paper tape, but others will argue the opposite.

The two layers you describe sounds like rock lath covered with drywall. I agree with HoustonRemodeler that the drywall was probably hung horizontally. Personally I like paper drywall tape but a little more experience is needed to use it rather that mesh tap.

Generally speaking, cracks narrower than 1/4" can be easily repaired, especially when they occur between drywall sheets.
