Help With Spindle Stuck in Brass Knob

I have a pair of Victorian-era brass knobs. Very lovely. The square spindle connecting them has broken off in both knobs. There's not even any part of the spindle to grab onto. So now I have a hard-to-use door, and two useless knobs.

How can I remove the remaining remnants of the spindle? The set screws come out fine, but that doesn't help matters.

Help, please!

Re: Help With Spindle Stuck in Brass Knob

Get a drill and an easy-out. Drill a hole in the end of the "spindles" insert the easy-out and turn counterclockwise and unscrew the spindle. You can buy an easy-out at most hardware, big box stores, or Sears.

By the way if you don't feel comfortable doing it you can send them to me and I'll remove the stems for you.
