Help! Old wood doors have lead-based varnish finish. How to encapsulate/remediate?
Kristin

Hi all,

Recently bought a 1925 house that has gorgeous heavy wood doors that were stained & varnished with lead (I know because I tested them). We don't want to paint them. But we do want to encapsulate or remove the lead in the easiest/fastest way possible (there's a lot of doors).

I have experience and understanding with lead paint, but not varnish. Can I  just cover with a clear coat product? Or wet sand then use poly over top? Please advise if you have experience with old varnishes! Thank you!

We are dealing with this same issue around doors, trim and windows. Any luck yet?! The old original wood is so lovely and so coated in lead! :(

Mollie,

There is really not that much lead in paint and varnish. I use franmar products to strip all paint and varnish. It works really well. I also don't pay any attention if the coatings have lead or not. I need them removed, so I remove them.
