Hello- home was built in 1932 and I'm having trouble IDing this built-in. What do you think was the original purpose? Having to post a link since the images won't load. Thank you.
Just a guess but I would say a telephone cubby.
I concur. These were common to that period.
The top half would obviously be for the candlestick-style phone, but what to make of the bottom section? Especially the vertical groove, and what looks to be a thin shelf added some time later.
If a multi-story house it could have been a dumbwaiter. But probably just a phone cubby. The vertical groove might have been them using 1X4 (or whatever) because they had it on hand. Lots of ???'s with some things in old houses and not always the answers to them.
Many had a decorative ppanel in the bottom to hide the wire and connector.
