Help identifying product in ceiling
James

House in Massachusetts from the early 1900's. We've been doing some work and are replacing a part of the ceiling's drywall. I'm finding underneath the old drywall this layer of something like brown heavy cardstock with paint over it that's nailed and glued to strips of wood. Anyone know what this is? I'm mostly interested in knowing if there's any reason to leave it in place or if it's ok to pull out. I've added a couple pictures of it still in the ceiling and of a piece that I tore out

Just a guess, but it may be Beaver Board.
