HELP for Discolored Laminate Cabinets
abundantjoyful

I've searched the threads and haven't seen a q/a on this. I have white (I know I'm crazy) laminate kitchen cabinets. The white cabinet frame behind the cabinet doors (primarily over the range) is discolored (slight yellow). The cabinet doors are fine. I've tried everything to clean it. My question is:
1. Do you know of a cleaning solution that would clean the discoloration?
2. If that doesn't work would you recommend painting the frame?
Thanks all.

Laminates are plastics and will yellow with UV exposure, time, and sometimes heat. It's in the plastic itself so there's no cleaning. That leaves only a surface treatment to renew it- paint or more laminate. New laminate will probably look lighter than the rest and it's not an easy DIY for beginners. Paint is the easiest option and a good one. You'll need to scuff or sand the surface so the paint will 'bite'. You need to prime before the paint- go with oil-based paint and primer for durability. Match the sheen of the paint to the cabinets, get the tinting right (you start light then darken a little at a time- do a test spot for this rather than the whole area) and that should fix things for some time to come. Oil based white paint yellows with age so it just might match the yellowing of the cabinets as they age but if not repainting is easy.

When I bought my white laminate cabinets 15 years ago, I was told they would never yellow. They have. Even though I was told they wouldn't yellow, the written guarantee covers only wooden cabinets. Can I hold the company to their oral word? Or any suggestions as to what to do....

Legally, there is little or nothing you can do to enforce verbal promises, particularly if the cabinet maker/installer doesn't admit to making such promises. They just don't hold up in court.

We have I think vinyl covered kitchen cabinets that have a Red Mahogany wood finish and the color is coming off in many places.  We have tried touch up markers and paints but nothing sticks.  What can we do to touch them up that will last?
