I have hedges that have not been taken care of properly and they have thinned out and have gotten vines and trees growing out of them. How can I reclaim my hedges and get rid of the vines and trees and get them thick again?
Remove the vines and trees, shape as desired, then thin the outer foliage so that sunlight can get into the inner branches. This will promote growth within the bush. Starting from scratch you probably need to do a severe pruning on them this year, then next year start alternating the side that you work on in spring/fall so that you've always got a thick bush.
