Header Size? 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12

I'm cutting in a 7' wide door/window combo in a bearing wall...what size timbers should I use?

Re: Header Size? 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12

thanks for your reply...no point load, but this is a two story house with attic, and this is in the gable end. Would you beef it up to 3-2x12, or are 2x10's over-engineered in most cases and sufficient in most timber houses?

Re: Header Size? 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12

even though its in the gable end wall, a large opening like that can deflect in heavy winds which makes the wall shudder. a beefier header can help eliminate this. use construction adhesive for the plys and even glue the sheathing to the studs. this will strengthen it immensely
