If the color/grain match at the seam is horrible, as in this case, then it's really NOT an efficient use of materials, because the customer will be unhappy, requiring removal and replacement of the countertop using even MORE material than if they had matched it right to begin with!

It's quite possible that both pieces are indeed from the same slab, but the layout could have been better. Just turning a piece around or flipping it over could have made all the difference.

I have to agree. That is a poor installation. If it were me, I would start with your salesperson you purchased from and ask for it to be either fixed to your standard or completely replaced which is really the only way I see it being fixed. It's a large investment, it should be done correctly. If the salesperson balks move to manager and keep going until you get what you were paying for... beautiful counter-tops.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied to my thread! I talked to our GC and he made it right. We both travel during the week and so he thought he was doing us a favor by not involving us in the template phase of the counter tops. We picked out a new slab and this time we went with him to the fabricator to discuss how it should be cut. I am THRILLED with the outcome. We still have the natural beauty of the veining and color, but this time the base color of the two pieces match perfectly! The seam is in the same place, but it seems everyone has a different opinion of where it "should" be, so I'm just happy that the two pieces match. Thanks again!! Final outcome is the 4th photo in the album below.

It looks like they kept the slab on the left, and fabbed a new slab for the right with a better color match.
