Hardwood over hardwood?

I have 55-year-old hardwood floors in my Cape Cod and the finish has completely worn away. I don't want to refinish the floors because the new gaps left from the removal of 3 walls would make it look piecemeal. So I'm going to put down a new, prefinished hardwood floor over the old one.

I have installed hardwood before, but never over existing hardwood. Am I asking for trouble if I run the new wood in the same direction as the old wood?

Just an alternative to consider vs. redoing the entire floor. It would be possible to weave in hardwood where the walls were taken out so that it is not noticeable. We did this in our home fixing a couple places where walls were located, heating supply vents were and to tie in an old kitchen area to the present dining room. You cannot see where the repairs are without knowing the exact spots.

I've thought about weaving in, but due to where the walls are and the dimensions of the gaps that were left over, it would be pretty noticeable.
