Hardwood floor oil based persistent smell
Thetasquared

My wife and I had hardwood floors installed almost 3 years ago. We had the installer use oil-based polyurethane. We expected there would be a strong odor, but the smell lasted a lot longer than we ever expected; longer than any advice column/discussion board I can find in my google searches. It took about 6-7 months before we didn't smell the polyurethane odor when we came home or for the odor to transfer to things we left on the floor. It was miserable, but we felt we were in the clear. Now this year with the hot weather we again will smell a slight odor when we come home from a long trip and didn't leave the AC on. Basically, hot-humid day with no AC = poly smell when you walk in the house that quickly goes away as we get used to it (and turn on the AC).

I'm hoping somebody can help us understand what is going on, and if we have a huge problem on our hands. I don't understand why after almost 3 years this stuff would still be curing, off-gassing etc. We are specifically worried about VOCs. We have a 2 year old son, and worry that we have exposed him to VOCs that may affect his health long-term.
