Hardwood floor damage
Bridgid

My hardwood flooring is only 4 years old, but it's already incredibly worn. What do you think... Does this look like normal wear & tear for a house with a dog & kids, or is this from improper cleaning and/or maintenance?

Bridgid,

True hardwood, wood flooring will last a good century or more. That wood looks like oak, not a real hardwood wood. Or maybe the wood was not dried long enough. Normally it take a whole lot to scratch a true wood floor. Our hardwood floors are now 130 years old, and they look great. Our floors have been sanded only once for a change in stain color. I would get rid of the animals inside the house. Sand the floor and stain it again. That can be done approx 5 times in the life of the wood. There are other factors that can affect the wood in a house. Like temperature and humidity. We do nothing special to clean our floors. Our house keeper runs the vacuum and then steam clean them maybe twice a week. For small marks, you can sand them out and stain that small area to repair the wood. I am not sure about the one picture that shows that hole in the wood. Looks like perhaps a knot hole on the back side, or the wood is over a hole and that created a weak point. There are many variables that can affect what you are seeing
