Gutter Attachment Advice

We moved to a new house in Vermont recently and are looking to add 5" gutters to the front of our house, but I am unsure how to secure them so they will be low enough to avoid snow and ice. We have a vinyl fascia board that is only about 3-1/2" on our house. If we place the gutter edge below the roof line to avoid snow and ice sliding into them, there is not enough material to grab into on the fascia board (see mockup using 5" x 3-1/2" wood block). The roof is also very steep (9/12 slope I believe). Is there a recommended way to lower them below the roof line and still firmly attach them to the fascia board?  Also, what is a good way to identify where the rafter tails are? Stud finder? The vinyl fascia board is covering them up.  Thank you!
