Grass over mulch

I just recently purchased a house where the current owners removed most of the grass - due to allergies - and laid down decorative cedar mulch. I suppose it looks nice but I would like to have grass. Some people have told me that I would have to completely remove all of the mulch and while others have said that if I till it in, I should be able to lay sod over top...please help!!

If it were me, I'd rake up the cedar. If it's in decent shape, it can be reused in the new flower beds you're likely to create.

Take it up. Sod won't be able to root throught it. If you till it in you may get mushrooms all over your yard as it decomposes & it may still keep sod from rooting in as it rots & uses a lot of nitrogen. Stockpile it & use it later.

I agree. The mulch should be removed. If you have no use for it you could also compost it.
